What exactly is required for a thesis?

Posted on 20 January 2011 by Tony

Hi,
I am currently doing a thesis on SharePoint server 2010 and SharePoint WorkSpace 2010 and I’m going to compare it with similar software. The only problem is that I’m more of a practical person – hands on if ya know what I mean – and I struggle with theory. I would like to know how to write a thesis. I’m not too sure what exactly is expected of me or how the thesis should be laid out. I would appreciate any tips or help at all! Thank you.

Document Management System – Any Recommendations?

Posted on 14 January 2011 by

My organisation is looking to invest in a Document Management System.

I have been presented with two similar systems: InVu and Microsoft SharePoint. Does anyone have any experience with these systems?

With little knowledge of what’s out there, can anyone recommend some good systems?

Many thanks

There are actually a lot of issues here. How many users are there, and what OS and apps do they run? Exactly what features do you need? My husband’s office moved to a Sharepoint server and it was a complete and utter disaster because most of the users run Linux and Open Office and other Linux-based apps. Over 50% of the users were unable to do their jobs and resorted to setting up small servers for each group. Also, what kind of sysadmin do you have? Sharepoint is horrible to manage. You’ll need a large and very talented team to keep it running.

Save word documents in 2 locations in one click?

Posted on 16 February 2009 by

Can you save a MS Word doc to your harddrive and a separate web location like Sharepoint in one click? I can save a document straight to my Sharepoint site or to my harddrive, but it would be very convenient to save them to both places at once by just clicking “save” or something similar. Is there a macro for this maybe? Thanks much.

Sorry, Word no can do.

What software is like a home version (family use) of Sharepoint?

Posted on 10 February 2009 by

We use a Sharepoint site at work, and would love to have something like this for home. Various members of my family have their own computers, and it would be great to share documents… photos… calendars… weblinks… etc. I’m looking for something similar to Sharepoint, but for use on our computers and accessible via our network. Either web-based of software-based.

Anything???

Chosen Answer:

Well, you have quite a few options.

1. Go with the free Sharepoint itself. There are plenty of places on the web who can host Sharepoint for you (though they will charge a fee).

2. Go with a plethora of “social networking” sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn … the advantage of this is that a lot of people are already on there and the connection is always on. Depending on the site, you can adjust who can see what.

3. If you just want to share files, make one of your computers a “file share” computer. You can share entire drives or just specific folders. Apparently you can do something like this with windows itself, and I’m sure you can find something else online that can do this.

4. Depending on how big “your network” is and if you are willing to have a computer on 24/7 (or whenever you want the family to access this portal), you can set up one of your computers as a server with a “virtual pc” installation. In this virtual pc, you can purchase and install windows server 2003/2008 and download free WSS 3.0 from Microsoft website, administer your own Sharepoint, and nurse it like a baby (after a while, it will be self-sufficient). That is the set-up I have at home.

Looking for the name of a program – somewhat similar to SharePoint?

Posted on 16 July 2008 by

Someone at my work asked me about this program…but ive never used it :( It’s web based, and as he explained it, you can say upload a word document, and it is a live file, so like if me and him were working on it at the same time, we would see eachothers changes live….

Thats the best explanation i can give with the info he gave me…

Hope i make sense!

Creating a dynamic web site using the sharepoint designer?

Posted on 20 March 2008 by

Hi,
I am new to the share point designer concept. So I just want to know can I dynamically create a sharepoint designer web site similar to creating it using other dynamical means such as ASP.NET?

THANKS

Chosen Answer:

For most people, it is easier to use dotnetnuke than sharepoint.
