Using Microsoft Project 2010 to Plan My Trip

Posted on 06 January 2012 by Tony

I’m taking a sabbatical from October 7th to January 2nd. It’s an award I was given at my 10 year Microsoft anniversary. It’s an opportunity to unplug, relax and come back recharged for 2012 – specifically Project Conference 2012 in March! There’s never a great time to take time off, but this window turns out to be a pretty good time. I plan to write a blog post reflecting on my 10 years at Microsoft – stay tuned for that!

Now back to the topic. With 12 weeks time off, my wife and I discussed many different ways to spend the time. We wanted to spend time with family, visit Europe and also go to South Asia for some warm weather. We started planning with paper and pen and very quickly we realized that we needed a lot of rewriting and paper. :–) Some of the reasons why this was the case:

- We needed visas for a few of the places we wanted to visit and visas need processing time, have restrictions, etc.

- We wanted to spend time with both of our extended families. Family dates kept moving.

- We were flexible in our travel dates and could adjust our schedule based on ticket/hotel prices.

- We had a preference on the trip order.

So what did I do? I think most people would have tried using Excel – which would have helped but not solve the problem. I went right into Project Professional 2010 to schedule my trip! And it has proved to be very helpful in planning and communicating my trip details to family members – thanks to the power of scheduling and the timeline view!

Here are two simple steps I took before I started planning:

1. Change Working Time. I changed the default calendar to a 24 Hour calendar. Be sure to go into Options and change hours per day/week values. Vacation is a 24-hour “job”! :–)

2. Change Project Information. Apply the 24-hour calendar to your Project.

That’s it. I was ready to go! Very easy to plan, to change and communicate. And most importantly, I’m excited about my time off and I feel confident that we’ve put together a solid plan! Below is a high-level timeline – I’ve cleaned it up for privacy reasons but should give you a good idea of how I am communicating my trip schedule with my family and friends.

Is it possible to convert an Access file into a web database?

Posted on 11 March 2011 by Tony

In MS Access 2010, is it possible to, given a database created as a desktop database, switch the view to be as though you clicked the “Web Database” option at the beginning?

Say the database passes the web compatibility test, is it possible to switch to be creation of a web database?

I know that if the database is Web compatible, you can still publish to a SharePoint site, but when you’re creating it as a Web database, many of the options which are not compatible with the Web are excluded. Especially when designing forms and macros.

So yeah, is there a way to switch afterthefact?

I’ve looked, and can’t see such an option, and I couldn’t find anything on google about the matter at all.

thanks

Chosen Answer:

Yes you can – if you want to be limited to running on Microsoft servers and limit your users to using Microsoft browsers (and only certain versions). If you want to run a real database on a real website that’s of use to real users, you copy the data to a MySQL database and write the site as a real website. Without using anything that Microsoft produces (except, maybe, Windows and Notepad).

Can you send attachments with Microsoft Sharepoint?

Posted on 10 July 2008 by

If you have groups of people all using Microsoft Sharepoint, can you post a message to all people in your group and add an attachment to that message?
Do you have any pros or cons that you’ve found using Sharepoint? Thanks!

Chosen Answer:

what i have done is to subscribe to the page and any updates are sent as links in an email. it doesn’t send the file – just the link but that is better given the purpose of sharepoint.

overall i like the tool, it is easy to manage and provides some structure to what is often just a mess of files in a shared drive somewhere.

Creating a sharepoint web site?

Posted on 22 March 2008 by

HI,
Can anyone please explain to me the difference between creating a web site using the share point designer compared to creating a web site using ASP.NET?

I also would like to know, even if I create a dynamic web site completely using the share point designer do I still have to code the libraries(that performs the actual tasks) in ASP.NET.Thanks
According to some of the answers given so far I don’t need to know how to host a web site as my company will take care of it.

All I need to know is, as a developer what are the differences in creating a web site using the share point designer as opposed to using .NET? and even if I do use the share point can I include all the dynamic features as similar to creating a website in .NET

Chosen Answer:

The language is different, You can find step by step guide on how to create a website at http://www.aplis.net/ .

Auto Format Font style and colour in MS Word and MS Outlook?

Posted on 12 January 2007 by

Is it possible to use a function similiar to AutoCorrect to automatically format a certain word into a given Font, Style and colour

(e.g. every time I write “SharePoint” it will apply the Arial Font make “Share” bold and black and “Point” Italic and Blue – regardless of the font throughout the rest of the document .)

I would prefer for this to happen automatically as I type – but would be happy to use some sort of macro at the end (I don’t know how to write macros though!)

I use the following versions: MS Office Word 2003 and MS Office Outlook 2003.

Thanks for your help (Let me know if you need any more information)

Chosen Answer:

When you use a RichText Editor it automatically does that. Check out a few Javascript based ones at http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex16/richtexteditor/index.htm
