Updating SharePoint 2010 User Information

Posted on 03 January 2012 by Tony

One of my clients recently had an issue where a particularly high profile user (CEO) had their title spelled incorrectly in Active Directory; unfortunately the error wasn’t noticed right away and now, despite changing the information in Active Directory, SharePoint was still showing the wrong title in the People Picker when granting the user rights [...]

AD account password out of sync with the managed service account within SharePoint

Posted on 06 April 2011 by Tony

Problem: I am trying to start services on a server, when I start the Search Foundation service I get the following error: “The password for the account …\…, as currently stored in SharePoint, is not the same as the current password for the account within Active Directory.  To fix this with Powershell, run Set-SPManagedAccount -UseExistingPassword.”

Initial Hypothesis: The password for the account I am using to run the service using has been changed in AD, this does not match the password stored in the SharePoint.

Resolution: Reset the AD Password

Ensure SharePoint is using the correct pswd i.e. chnage the store managed account password as shown below using the Set-SPManagedAccount cmd.

SharePoint Server 2007 “403 Error”?

Posted on 02 August 2009 by Tony

When I try access any of the sharepoint sites hosted by IIS in Server 2003, I get a 403 error (Authentication Error)
Can Anyone Help Me.
I have Tryed Changing the Application Pool Identity of the site from Network Service to Local Service but I still have no luck.
This is a new SharePint 2007 Install.
Have configured Directory Security for site to “Enable Anonymous Access” & Authentication Access to Windows Intergrated Authentication.
So if anyone has any suggestions they would be helpful
Thanks.

Chosen Answer:

Not too uncommon.
Can you access http:// /default.aspx (using the page name as well) have you tried that? If you can get to that one but get the error when using http:// your application pool settings are incorrect.

These should be pointed to the correct SpsAppPool. Use the IIS manager, check the “virtual” site settings, and check Home Directory tab, you probably need to change the Application Pool the site is running under. There’s probably one named SpsAppPool that should be the correct one.

You can also search Microsoft using the following for more assistance.
Using the “title search” look for “HTTP and 403″ and use the IIS help under the intermrg and search for “security”, authentication, and custom error messages/pages.

More than likely the application pool is the issue.

what is organizational unit in sharepoint ?

Posted on 08 December 2008 by Tony

Chosen Answer:

SharePoint has groups for permissions and can pull information from Active Directory. I believe the term you are inquiring about has to deal more with AD than SharePoint

Computer staff recruiting question?

Posted on 22 November 2008 by

Obviously I do not need YOU!! to answer as if you were in an interview, but give me some sort of indication of what I should expect to hear or be looking out for would be appreciated

Describe the process you would go through in order to roll out a software package using both Active Directory and Group Policy.

Can you explain the function of a firewall?

Do you have any experience with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007? If so, can you explain how you have used it in the past?

Can you explain the disaster recovery process that you had in place in a previous position?

Can you explain the major differences between a switch and hub?

You are in the office dealing with a damaged staff laptop, when the phone rings. It’s an irate user telling you they’ve run out of printer credit. At the same time one of the servers starts beeping an alarm signal. How do you deal with this situation?

Describe some form of network documentation you have produced in the past
Any scenario solutions appreciated

Sincere THANKS to all answers,
I need to make it clear I am NOT!!! seeking answers for myself on how to answer the above Q’s
I have done my time in the trenches
Am looking ofr serious answers of other opions from people.

Chosen Answer:

Well if I was interviewing you I would expect to hear accurate answers to the factual questions and then would follow up with (initially) one or two questions to verify your understanding. If you stumble on those questions a couple more would be offered to give you a chance to recover.

With the opinion type questions I would expect to get a rational answer from you and then you would be asked to defend your answer by answering provocative questions.

Remember that the interviewer will be trying to find out what you do know rather than what you don’t know and that they probably have a prior view of what answer they expect.

At the same time they will be evaluating you for how you would fit into their company and work team.

Good luck.

Web portal and Active Directory?

Posted on 08 July 2008 by Tony

I’m running Win2k3 domain, with Exchange & Sharepoint. Not all of our workstations use active directory. I am trying to create an employee web portal that provides a single sign-on to exchange & sharepoint, as well as some other resources at the same time. I know it can be done, I just can’t find any example scripts/tutorials that would help. Where do I begin?

Thanks.
What I really want is for users to enter their active directory username and password to login to the employee portal. After they have logged into the portal, they can click on a link that takes them to exchange OWA or sharepoint without having to enter their username and password again.

Chosen Answer:

Easiest thing to do would be to create a new web using Windows Authentication. You also have to enable Impersonation. Even after a user has logged in to a web site using ADS credentials, the ASPNET user account is used to process any transactions afterward. Impersonation uses the currently logged in user’s credentials to do whatever it is you want to do. Look into Visual Web Developer Express 2008. If you intend on doing anything regarding Active Directory, look into the System.DirectoryServices namespace. You will find it very powerful.

Hope this helps

What software would allow me to create a website like this?

Posted on 22 April 2008 by Tony

Please look at this website:

http://atlanta.citysearch.com/yellowpages/directory/Atlanta_GA/290/page1.html

I want to create a website that has a business directory like the above site. I really like the layout but I am curios what they used to create that site? I have tried DotNetNuke but it seems very limited. I am looking for a CMS that will allow me to perform the same features.

Can this be done in Sharepoint? Any help would be EXTREMELY appreciated.

Thanks!!

Where are all the document files created or uploaded to a Sharepoint site stored?

Posted on 13 March 2008 by Tony

I am in charge of installing a new Sharepoint 2007 server and migrating the data (documents and the like) from the old Sharepoint site. I need to know where the files would be located.

Are they stored on the server-side in a seperate directory just for data, in a special .cab type file or what?

I know that I cannot use any of the Microsoft backup tools to help because the versions are incompatible, according to white-papers I read at Microsoft.

Any help, especially links, would be most appreciated.

Thanks
