AD account password out of sync with the managed service account within SharePoint

Posted on 06 April 2011 by Tony

Problem: I am trying to start services on a server, when I start the Search Foundation service I get the following error: “The password for the account …\…, as currently stored in SharePoint, is not the same as the current password for the account within Active Directory.  To fix this with Powershell, run Set-SPManagedAccount -UseExistingPassword.”

Initial Hypothesis: The password for the account I am using to run the service using has been changed in AD, this does not match the password stored in the SharePoint.

Resolution: Reset the AD Password

Ensure SharePoint is using the correct pswd i.e. chnage the store managed account password as shown below using the Set-SPManagedAccount cmd.

Career in .Net(Sharepoint) vs SOA?

Posted on 24 March 2010 by

Hello Friends,

I need your expert advise please. I have been working in Microsoft Technology (VB/ASP/ASP.Net) for last 7 years. But looking at the current market condition, it seems there are more job opportunities in SOA field. Do you think it would be better to switch to SOA technology (IBM/Oracle etc) or continue in Microsoft Technology like sharepoint ? Sharepoint also has good market presence. But I am not able to decide on this. If I should continue in Microsoft technology, is sharepoint is a good choice or should I look into any other area of Microsoft technology ? Need your help please.

Thanks,

Ram

Chosen Answer:

Silverlight is gaining momentum.

But ASP.Net/AJAX has a good 5-10 years left…

Stay with Microsoft though – seriously!

Should I use the time in this current economic downturn to change my career?

Posted on 17 March 2009 by

My story is a long one, and I won’t bore you with the details of how I got to where I am — except for this:

I am going to be 42 this year. I have a bachelor’s in finance, but shortly after receiving my degree (which took me 6 years), I started a family and stayed home for about 10 years. Consequently, I don’t have a lot of serious work experience (let’s say 5 years). I majored in finance because I though it was the “right” thing to do, but think I may have missed my calling — I have suppressed computer geek tendencies!

I was laid off from my job back in November, and my confidence has been shaken. I recently became a MCAS in Excel 2007, because I thought it would make me more marketable. Applying for the few jobs out there has made me realize that I’m just not into this. I’m wondering if I should use the time off to get some training and try to enter the I.T. field. Even if I did, however, I don’t know what avenue to pursue. In finance, I was in the mid-50′s salary range, and I don’t really want to go backwards at this point in my life. Although I’m interested in I.T., I don’t want to work late hours – I have a family and I need to be there for them. I don’t have a problem with working a LOT of hours, I just want to be able to choose them. For example, I’d rather start working earlier in the day than ending at 11 o’clock at night because I have to wait until no one is online to perform maintenance. I am good at wrapping my head around software, I have an aptitude for programming and problem-solving, and I like people. I’ve been told by I.T. friends that I “know just enough to be dangerous!”

Someone please give me some qualified advice. I’ve tried picking the brains of some of my I.T. friends, but it’s hard to schedule time with them because THEY ARE WORKING (those bastards). Someone whose opinion I respect has suggested to me that I get into Sharepoint and get my MCSA to start. Does anybody have any advice for me?

My job title dilemna?

Posted on 09 October 2008 by

I have been working for my current company for about 4 years now. I started off as a help desk analyst, but quickly busted my butt and studied and got promoted to Senior Help Desk Analyst about 2 years or so ago.

Thing is that they said they want me to do alot of tasks relating to engineering and administrator functions. They said that I would get a job title with Associate Systems/Network Engineer, but that was like two years ago. When I ask them about it now, they keep avoiding the situation and are complete asses about it all. I am getting screwed in the pay also, and thinking that maybe if they bump me up to that title, they will have to pay me more.

I mean I am doing a huge things not help desk related ranging from a huge VMWare Ace rollout to thousands of computers, and lots of VMWare server ESX migrations and administration. I also assisted in other tasks such as making the whole 4 story building wireless ready and implementing/configuring WAP points. Recently I have been in charge of the help desk (basically manager over 15 help desk reps) and tons other duties including lots of a range of subjects related to everything imaginable. The good thing about working for a company with about 6000 workers I guess.

I am not the only person they are screwing. The main SDE service desk admins and sharepoint admin left the company a couple weeks ago, and they took one of my coworkers and gave him both responsibilities of SDE and Sharepoint admin. This is obviously alot of work for both responsibilities to have someone do, and they are keeping his title as “Help Desk Analyst” and refuse to change his title. Again probably cause they are paying him help desk salary and they are cheap and dont want to bump him up in scale.

Question is, I spend 30 hours a week studying a wide array of materials ranging from OS to Vmware to Cisco networking and honestly if you see the things I am doing for the title “help desk” is unbelievable.

How does all this work, for when another company wants to call my current employer. They will call and see that my title is help desk analyst. Like they are going to believe me when I put all the things I do on the job. Can they even ask my current employer what my current job title is or what I do?

Any help or tips would be great

Thanks

Chosen Answer:

If you leave under good circumstances, you should be able to have your title changed just before leaving the company (since it won’t affect your pay).
If this is too much trouble, I would just put a more accurate job title on your resume, whether it was “officially” changed or not. Make sure your references and prior managers/ supervisors know about this just in case. No one should have an issue with you putting a job title that accurately reflects the job that you do on your resume.
