Business-critical processes with SharePoint and SQL

Posted on 27 November 2011 by Tony

SharePoint 2010 provides the ability to connect to backend business systems, surface business data in SharePoint and make it accessible by, and useful to, employees across the organization. Almost every company of significant size uses ERP and CRM solutions to run core business processes. Over time, companies have developed detailed practices around using such systems to support vertical disciplines within the organization (e.g. product planning, financial performance management, supply-chain management, etc.), yet challenges remain with regard to driving visibility and collaboration, based on business data, across different disciplines and teams. These challenges stem from the fact that only a fraction of employees are licensed and trained to use those backend systems, and from the high cost and complexity of integrating such systems across different functions and teams.

With SharePoint and SQL, once the relevant business data is surfaced in an enterprise-wide collaboration platform, several benefits can be gained; first and foremost, access to the data that underlines core business processes can now be viewed, analyzed and acted on by any employee in the organization (based on business priorities and permissions granted). With the relevant business data readily available, better decision making, quicker and more effective exception handling, and faster time-to-market can all be achieved. In addition, users are able to interact with the business data through a user interface they are already familiar with instead of having to switch between multiple user interfaces which are oftentimes not as user friendly.

Interestingly enough, training-related cost reductions do not count for the bulk of the TCO reductions that could be achieved by implementing backend data connectivity with SharePoint. The more significant source of such efficiencies is the impact related to reducing business risk; as more functions in the organization are exposed to the business data that is related to their daily responsibilities, and as workflows are implemented to support cross-team exception handling and problem solving, more and more of the risk associated with the underlying business processes can be mitigated, leading to more efficient processes and to reduced operational costs.

SharePoint site printing?

Posted on 25 January 2011 by Tony

I’m looking for a little help with printing a Microsoft SharePoint web page. My company has a SharePoint with various subsites we use to track information. We print out the various pages everyday to keep a hard copy of our records. Each site is a Wiki site with various webparts added. Out of the 5 sites, 3 of them print exactly as shown on the screen and in print preview. However, for some reason that I cannot figure out, 2 of them print out with huge font that takes up ~twice as many pages as it should. The Wiki pages look normal on the monitor and in print preview, and were setup exactly the same as the other pages, so I’m not sure where the problem is coming from. Thanks for any insight!
Just double checked, the print preview for the pages the print large shows the large font as well, but the actual web pages look normal.

What are the benefits and costs of Microsoft SharePoint?

Posted on 06 December 2010 by Tony

My previous company was very large and we utilized Sharepoint for a host of items, I have been asked to research the benefits and costs of SharePoint for a small, nonprofit organization, but the Microsoft website is ridiculously vague. The organization consists of 49 people at 16 different locations; any suggestions?

When using wordpress, how do you set it up to use with your own domain and hosting company?

Posted on 02 July 2010 by

I am ready to enter the world of WordPress. Sounds great. My background is FrontPage, Classic ASP, SharePoint Designer, and light .net programming. I have a domain I have had for some time and hosting at godaddy. I want to use the functionality of WordPress and its plug-ins but am not sure where to start. Any advice or clues are welcome.

Chosen Answer:

Log into your account go to your Hosting Control Center, Click on “Your Applications”, Search for “WordPress”, click on the search result “WordPress 3″, then click “Install Now” and GoDaddy will set up the database for you automatically. You can tell it either install into a folder (i.e. www.yoursite.com/blog) or a sub domain (i.e. blog.yoursite.com). You can install WordPress on both Linux and Windows servers so your type of hosting won’t matter as long as you have the right PHP & MySql versions on your plan.

Creating a quiz in SharePoint 2007?

Posted on 09 June 2010 by Tony

We are using SharePoint 2007 and I currently can not use Designer. Is there a way to create a quiz in SharePoint that the rest of the company can answer the questions? The reason I want a quiz rather than using the survey is because these need to be automatically graded. Once they are completed by several hundred people I need to determine the winner within a few short hours. So, can this be done without Designer in SharePoint?

If not, any suggestions? Thanks!

Chosen Answer:

Hi, for the first time I want to make quizzes to help my work, I found a tool, but I never used the SharePoint to make quiz.
I have always used one quiz maker – Wondershare QuizCreator to create attractive and interactive quizzes easily for my training.
It supports 9 kinds of question types and multimedia inserted.
It can not only grade for my quizzes, track the quiz result by E-mail.
Suggest you have a try the quiz creator from: http://www.sameshow.com/quiz-creator.html#247
