Why does Sharepoint look different online than in the editor?

Posted on 22 June 2010 by

I’ve been having so much trouble with Sharepoint. My web pages look perfect when I edit them in Sharepoint, but after I upload them, they look nothing like what they should. Are there any common causes for this?
Also, what browser works best for SharePoint? IE, right?
I know, but it looks different from the preview in SharePoint. I know that all browsers show up differently and that IE has issues, but I can’t get to work right with ANY browser.

Chosen Answer:

there may be style sheets that affect your content that the sharepoint editor isn’t recognizing. with the editors i’ve (had to) work in, there are a few set styles you can choose from (for example formatting your

tag to be purple and bold) – so those are the only styles you see applied to it. but then when you publish, that content is now also inheriting the styles applied to the entire site.

in summary: the editor content is only affected by a few specific styles; only after it is published does it take on the rest of the page styles.

hope that makes sense :)

as for your second question – it really depends on your audience. if most of your audience is going to be using IE, then make damn sure your page looks good in IE. you ideally should be testing it in firefox, ie, safari and google chrome. the browsers that are not in your target demographic, you can usually get away with making them look “just passable”.

unless you’re asking about which browser will display the actual sharepoint system best, i dont know that. but I’d go with firefox, as it’s years ahead IE in terms of rendering capabilities (making internet stuff look good ;)

Microsoft Sharepoint Calendar questions?

Posted on 27 September 2007 by Tony

I am trying to setup a sharepoint calendar so a user can post an event on the calendar and it will go to a another user for approval before it gets posted. Does any one know if that is possible. I can’t seem to find the answer anywhere and my attempts at setting up a workflow were unsuccesful

Also is there a way to shrink the default calendar to a smaller size. I know you can shrink the pixels but then you have to scroll to see the whole calendar.

Thanks for the help!

Chosen Answer:

Yes, you can require approval on any list, including calendars. This is actually out of the box functionality, so you don’t even have to build the workflow. You can simply go into managing settings for the list and then in general settings, click into version settings and require approval. When something is submitted, only admins on the list will be able to approve it. Note: if you are an admin it will automatically post, so you’ll need to test with another account.

On your other question, I don’t know of a way to shrink the calendar, but you may want to try another view, such as a data list if you have limited space to work with.

Good Luck!
